Before Jesus even came to earth, it was prophesied that He would come.
Prophecy is God revealing events that will happen in advance. The Old
Testament tells the story of a number of great prophets -- Moses,
Elijah, Samuel, and many others -- who prophesied about a Savior who was
to come to earth. There are over 300 prophecies in the Old Testament
that talk about this Savior.
Here are just a few of the prophecies that Jesus fulfilled:
He was to be born of a virgin.
The prophet Isaiah prophesied, "Therefore the Lord Himself will give
you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son,
and will call him Immanuel (God with us)." (Isaiah 7:14)
He would be born in Bethlehem. The prophet Micah foretold, "But you,
Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out
of you will come for Me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins
are from of old, from ancient times."
The exact nature of Jesus' death for our sins was also foretold.
David said, "...a band of evil men has encircled me, they have
pierced my hands and my feet. I can count all my bones; people stare and
gloat over me. They divide my garments among them and cast lots for my
clothing." (Psalm 22:16-18)
The prophet Isaiah said, "We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of
us has turned to his own way; and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity
of us all." (Isaiah 53:6)
Christ fulfilled many prophecies when He came to earth 2,000 years ago,
but there are still other prophecies that will be fulfilled in the
future. These prophecies talk of a time when Christ will come to earth
again at the end of the world, and He will begin His earthly reign among
us as King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
